Solved over discord as mentioned above, make sure you're using 5.43 if you're on a standalone build (https://forum.toribash.com/showthread.php?t=629769) and don't want to switch to a Steam version. All the earlier versions of the game will no longer connect to forums correctly (which is done for logins, fetching user data and so on), though you will still be able to access game server.
