Second Suggestion (probably much easier to implement than the first one).

Changing the location of the motd message.
For example, the motd could be displayed above the chat, and the font could be slightly bigger and bolder.

Currently, motd is displayed in chat.
This causes the chat to become a spam of motd messages on servers with fast-paced mods.
For this reason, motd often doesn't fulfill its intended purpose, as beginner players assume it's just some random links or system messages and ignore them.
