It's just a more convenient way of measuring, it can technically measure offset too (I checked it, it's not as much as you'd think)

Yeah, keyword "if you don't". Other distance records already required you
not to DM yourself so this is not a new rule, merely an old rule that was not officially in place on this record for some reason
