It's not "awareness" at all. Just looks like it, but it simple responds to pushes and resistance, such as wind or a wall or friction of some sort. It is still pretty cool though.
Humans work exactly the same.
It's just that our sensory apparatus and 'processing unit' is much more complex.
We
respond to environment all the time, no matter what we do.
