Well, Avatar has an incredibly cliche plot and it's still, in a way, a social commentary (Westerners vs Native Americans, etc). Nothing new, though.

But yeah.
I think there are 3 types of movies:
1. Movies that are produced solely to make $$$ and target mainstream audience. Generally contain lots of action, run-of-the mill slapstick humor, average acting and predictable plot. (thousands of examples. From "meet the spartans" to "meet the fockers" to your copy-paste action and chick flicks that come out every 2 months)
2. Movies that contain intricate plot and subtle underlying themes which target lesser market (2001 Space Odyssey, Return (2003), Seventh Seal, One flew over Cuckoos Nest, Solyaris (1972), There Will be Blood, A History of Violence, etc.)
3. Versatile type of movie that combines elements which appeal to both the general public and movie connoisseurs. (Godfather, The Shining, Misery, Pulp Fiction, Idiocracy, Clockwork Orange, etc)

PS: naturally my examples are based on my own experiences - get over it

There are new original movies, but most of them fly under the radar unless you actively look for them. Many of them are indie works.
