Over what? Hurt feelings? The school didn't do anything legally wrong-- personally, I had a good laugh over this. Also, Onamist is correct: rural Mississippi isn't the best place to be openly gay.
Consider: the students didn't have to come out of the closet-- surely they were aware of the consequences of doing so, but they chose to do it anyway. This can be blamed on them as easily as anyone else.
I'm no lawyer, but I'm sure someone who is would have something to latch on to. This being a form of segregation and all.
Other than that - someone always has to walk in the front lines and take the blows, for any social change.
