Time and money. How of much of the game could fit in a 12/24/26/52 episode season? That's why I gave Clannad as an example - with 24 episodes over two seasons, they turned a beautiful nakige into an anticlimax of Deus Ex Machina. Sure, it was great, but we miss out on things such as what Ryou did after the Kyou after.
Tomoya only got around two of the twelve lights in the anime, iirc.
