I'd guess it was a cut version cos the flashback for Mayu's past & the sexual abuse from her step father alone should be enough to remove all laughs for the rest of it, let alone once you learn all about Nana's life

Depends on how you look at it or how many times you've watched it.
It's sad, depressing etc etc but in the usual Ghibli way they ensure it's the character's fault for some of it happening. E.g. staying with the aunt would've sucked, but it would've avoided the inevitable outcome.

Heh, Akira's certainly an experience. 1st time I saw it was around 90/91, used to be advertised in gaming mags... That shit practically broke my head back then.
