Why steal when people give it to you if you wait for them to be done with it. I also have worked in trash. You'd be surprised about all the stuff people forget about when they throw it away like it magically poofs.

Never throw a legal document away. File it.

Also, it is probably someone you know that know and trust. It's fair to say (uncredited) that the majority of crime is committed by some that the victim knew. The internet is a great way to protect yourself. No physical contact. Now that's security. This barrier, in my experience, makes people more comfortable sharing personal feelings. I think this puts people in a better position to make stronger bonds. 'Internet' friends are the only 'Real' friends.
