Jake, competitive tournaments have always been around within the communities, and most often its sponsored by the developers themselves. Nowadays however, with SC2 as a leading example among the DOTA games in general we have 3rd party hosts; but ever since the early days of CS you saw valve-sponsored tournaments on the forums.

Think not small-tier, think mid-tiers, not end-tiers.
