Single-player does persist on death, and while things do drop at your body when you die, you don't want to leave it sitting too long or it will despawn.
Last I checked, things only despawn when you reset the server. It'll just sit there otherwise.
Monk; have you tried using Hamachi, or did you make sure to use the default port when you attempted to join your friend's server?
