Opinions on this? Is it maybe us who should go back and retrace our mistakes, instead of looking at ways to kill the fundamentalists? We've been building up the tension for several years now, by ignoring poverty, selling out iraq property, trading weapons etc.

We could kill them by the thousands every day. The best they can do is nowhere near that number (per year).
I know you guys haven't had an actual war since the middle ages, but turning the other cheek isn't an option.
There probably won't be another NATO ground war in the Middle East. Arming Turkey and perhaps getting them to sit down with the Kurds is an option though. Tolerating Assad would guarantee Russian help in the area, and the Saudis and Jordanians are already on our side. Dividing up Iraq's policing between these states could work post-war.
