Gynx you deserve a medal for your time
So I'll go about my 'Contribution' to this discussion by stating some ideas before explaining them.
Raising Awareness
Share your Achievement
I thought, why doesn't toribash have one of those classic 'Share your achievement on (Social media) and earn this exclusive item!'. This would be an untradable item for obvious reasons but even if people don't care about the shout out on social media, at least they'll do it anyway because they're provided with a motive. This is may even be just an achievement saying 'I helped Toribash' or whatever (If anyone has any bright ideas for this feel free to suggest).
Promo codes
Allow me to explain: User has the option to generate a promo code specific to their account that another
First time user can enter upon joining the game. This would award the user that generated it with anything from a new statistic that gets shown on the user profile saying 'Number of users helped join: [NUMBER]' to maybe even an item that tracks that very statistic and displays it ingame (Not necessarily a wearable item - more of something that's viewable when the player types /stats [USER NAME]). Of course it would also be good if the new user is also rewarded with something but that can be easily decided - What's important is whether or not this suggestion has any chance of being noticed or not. The idea was somewhat (Vaguely) derived from the TF2
Spirit Of Giving cosmetic item. Again what would sell this suggestion is the motive. The interesting thing is, from what I've seen,
many members of the community are VERY PREPARED to do what they can to raise awareness of the game - without any reward and so this wouldn't be a totally new and outrageous concept. Of course many implications must be put in place in order to prevent this from exploitation but with community members actively thinking about how we could get around this issue I'm sure/I hope we could collectively come up with at least one possible solution. Auto verification of users registering with new IPs and Emails...? (Everything along the lines of that - Though these are not for me to say considering I have limited knowledge of this).
Other features
Themes
One minor 'Feature' that could be added to draw in new users that actually find toribash (I say feature when really it's more of a game theme) is the stressing of certain elements that toribash has for instance: In the trailer I notice that the element of 'Total control' is really highlighted and used to sell the game to new players. In exactly the same way, why not add 'Do you have the skill?' or 'Do you have the patience?' and why not 'A Master belt is merely a White belt that never gave up' see what I'm trying to get at here? A direct question for a new user to provide them with something to go by when they first start out. I won't go into detail on this because it's only a slight adjustment.
Ingame Link
There should be an ingame link to the
FAQ Directory upon launching the game. All newbies have unanswered questions and won't necessarily know where to look for solutions. As someone new to any game it takes some tolerance to seek answers by trial and improvement which is exactly what I for one, did when I was in this very situation. Why should we put everyone through that? Here we are complaining about people leaving the game not long after joining yet only few of us seem to be actively trying to change that. Since newbies may not know the forums even exist it's crucial to introduce them to it because I think it's fair to say, the toribash community is a very unique and special community where: Everyone kinda knows everyone, one's able to find out aspects of the game they never knew about (Art, Organisations), meet new people with similar interests which leads to making
friends that you look for ingame and therefore ULTIMATELY resulting in the community gaining a new member that stays for good.
Four Catagories
When starting out in toribash I think it's important for the player to be able to have established their own goals other else they may be stuck as to what to do ingame. In my eyes, toribash itself is divided into fields (These are fields are purely opinionated. Just how I see the game and not necessarily how the game really is):
- Multiplayer
- Singleplayer
- Art
- Coding
Such wide range of fields means that we have a lot to work with. The chances of someone joining the game and not being able to go down at least one of these roots is very low. There's something for everyone and that's one of the CRITICAL aspects of toribash that I love and think should really be utilised when selling the game away to newbies. A new guy joins, he tries ingame a few things, tries again, fails again, tries multiplayer a couple of times, gets farmed by higher belts, goes back to single player a little more unenthusiasticly, gives up, never goes back to the game again - Having not once even visited the forums. What's sad is: That guy is a digital artist and in another life might've discovered the forums, learnt about Tori-Legends like Monobi and started making toribash art, having set a clear goal of what he wants to achieve in this game - which field he wants to go down. Hence the significance of forums. I personally think before just throwing a link to a seemingly endless database of threads and posts, the forums should be introduced first by directing players to the FAQ. Because that way they can get a longer answers that cover more of their questions without just going ingame and asking their heart out in the public chat.
