battle royale is a genre not started, but popularized by PUBG. calling this game a PUBG clone is similar to how every fps after doom was labeled a doom clone for a short period of time. bluehole studios is also using the unreal engine to develop their game, an engine created and licensed out by epic studios - the same studio developing the battle royale mode of fortnite
