ex-hs speaking, i'm sure someone who's currently staff can give a better answer:
general game and forum knowledge is pretty much essential, helps out in many places such as #support, tech support, beginner sanctuary and when talking to beginners
some ingame activity is nice so you can sit in the beginner servers, obviously forum activity since 80% of the job would be in forum/irc (so an irc client is good too), also a small amount of coding experience for FAQ stuff
