The only way I can really draw is just pictures from my head, not things like what you did/portraits.
I don't do many portraits, almost all of my drawings are designed by toughts.
This time i decided to make things a bit different, so i grabbed my skull model (i am a skull fan, of some sort xD) and started to rotate it and see the anatomy behind it.
I just grabbed the model and started drawing what i saw, i also placed it in the desk and once again I drawn what i saw. My idea was to make 2 skulls "looking" at each other. Now my idea is to draw some roses behind the skulls ^^
My advice: Do some "studies" of what you are drawing, specially if you will deal with anatomy
