Toribash

Great idea, i agree we desperately need more portability. Should be fairly simple to port toribash to adobe flash or smth

In what way a browser version is meant to aid these issues?

Also addressing the elephant in the room, mate you really need to realize that making a browser version of toribash is practically impossible and even if it could be done, there is no one to do the work. Do you expect the Event Squad to do all the coding and developing for you, free of charge?
instead of all this we should be focusing on the future of AI integration into Tori bash. imagine in seconds custom skins for your characters? custom items and so much more not only that it can create mods with a simple prompt there is so much to offer. just ask to even redesign the whole website make the ui/ux of texture operations better and so much more. this can all be controlled to prevent random inappropriate creations can be monitored and so much much more. Where wind meet is a popular souls-like Chinese game that already uses AI in its npc talks! u can talk to ur npc...

we gotta think forward what is lacking is the ability to be a user-friendly approached game, its not attractive because no one can even create a jointed set. even if it means creating a whole new BASED GAME think about it.. its already around us its in our jobs we gotta push forward i love what this game has to offer

just an idea lets ask chatgpt?

- edit i actually dont know if this is possible im a dreamer

Toribash is bloody beautiful and super attractive wdym. Largely due to the fact that ai hasn't gotten to it yet.

Jointed sets and custom items are valuable because they take time and effort to create. An artist or their customer decide upon shapes and colors that best represent an emotion or idea they have in their mind. Every line, every detail are placed where they belong, on purpose. That's the whole point of things being custom-made. No art that ai can create will be unique in the same way, it won't have any thought, emotion or purpose behind it, and will always lack in detail - it is only remixing art that humans already created and trained it on.

I also refuse to believe that you can just ask chatgpt to redesign toribash website and make texture operations better (??) and get any decent results in return. It requires way more work and tweaking than that, once again, just to get a half-assed result that will doubtfully be as good as what we've got now. (You might as well ask ai to redesign toribash yourself and see what happens)

Ai can do stuff quick, but bad. Toribash is much more about slow but good, the game or forum will not benefit from what large language models or other generative ai have to offer.

Curious about the 'and so much much more' that ai can do for us. Like what, play the game instead of us perhaps? That'd be even more user-friendly wouldn't it, anyone could become an artist, an item forger and a pro player too! All you need to know is a couple simple prompts uh-huh yeah right

Rebuilding the whole game (!!) with the sole purpose to fill it with ai slop is not going to improve user friendliness. It's going to take the last few things that people still love and enjoy about this game and turn them into complete and utter shit.

..... Why has no one done this yet? YES!!! This is what this game needs... NO this is what the world needs.

Give one use case where using AI improves Toribash gameplay, I'll wait. No, DecapAI doesn't count as that's a developer's effort. No, texturing isn't part of the gameplay. No, Uke talking back to you was already done without AI since 2010.

If you want to use that for yourself, by all means go ahead. Don't sell it to others claiming it's created by you or some known artist, be clear it was AI.
Also as others said, the whole point of making sets for Toribash is artists take the creative liberty to work with the client and make sure it caters to what they want. It's a hobby that takes effort and joy to create something that not only is the artist proud of but will also be worn for quite a long time.
Taking away a major part of Tori customization in the name of mass automation sounds stupid and would only serve to drive everyone away from this dystopian future.

I'll assume you mean 3D items by this, which needs more than just "Hey @Claude/@MeshyAI generate me a 3D model of a sword", you need to scale them differently depending on the body part due to how the scaling works in Toribash. There's also proper UVs and textures, item.dat editing, game preview and more, but feel free to message Icky on Discord if you ever want to upload an AI model with AI textures as your own custom item for $50 - buying a custom item will benefit the game more than whatever fantasy you're having right now.

Okay I'm aware of this as Blender's Python API being improved upon for AI integration with Claude, but even then the resulting series of .obj's need to be converted back to .tbm's format. Doable, but don't see why waste the time doing this instead of learning modmaking - it's not difficult at all.

When's the last time enough people complained about any site issue that warranted a major redesign? Toribash would've stayed on the old forums and nothing would change.
Granted, multiple texture uploads can be iffy at times, but I'd rather pay a site dev to improve upon it and make it actually work instead of sloppifying the forums into many compounded issues.

Had to do research on this. WWM uses LLM in a limited way for conversations and makes it follow a more natural language. It's a good instance of using the tech in an industry that tried to push it for maximizing profit margins.
HOWEVER, Toribash is about fighting. When was the last time you spent a whole round doing /em conversations every turn? Never?
Do you want to hit Uke and for Uke to go "Good hit! You're doing great! Make sure to hit me faster and stronger to make sure you dismember my thorax." "Woah there, don't slip. You'll get lifted easily, like this! *Lift*"
I don't see how WWM's example is related to what Toribash needs, it's not a rouge-like, there's no natural language flow, you bash people or Uke with the occasional chatting and betting, nothing more, nothing less.

You're mistaken. It's not user-friendly due to the inherit way Toribash gameplay works.
You're controlling 20 joints, each of which have 3-4 states to choose from, which can get very overwhelming very fast to anyone not used to doing this within 20 turnframes.
Mobile Toribash exists and has brought in players, the Toribash discord still gets newcomers at a decent rate. None of the newcomers will go "Okay I've installed this full body fighting simulation, time to texture my whole character even though I don't know if that's possible or how it works!"
From what I've been seeing, more newcomers are getting better at the game at a faster pace compared to before due to the abundance of tutorials and guides on both the forums and Discord. There are many videos and pointers as to how to play this game, and the hundreds of millions of replays for any mod you have in mind.

I'd rather ask you to reconsider that Toribash isn't Skyrim. In fact, use the AI to compare Toribash to any other game, feel free to come back once you have better points than "replace the artists with AI! replace the developers with AI! replace me with AI!"

I was trying to post this earlier yesterday but my login expired and I lost my progress:

With the exception of Hampa A.K.A the creator of Toribash and Nabi Studios: Avwave, Dranix, Fish, Sir, Nokturnal, War_Hero, Suomynona, Jarmund, SlainVeteran, dafe, are all legends that have contributed to the game in some way regarding devwork and programming that pushed the games life-expectancy forward for many years. Including the amazing 20+ developers that have worked on the game themselves as well, many people over the years have increased the possibilities of utilizing the forums and in-game functionalities during their respective eras. While not all the work has been godly or something to dm your friends about, behind the scenes there's been an equal share of positive/negative emotions amongst devwork and implementations that go unnoticed that may be due to Nabi NDA and the like. Believe me when I say players aren't the only one's who've been through the ringer with Toribash.

Outside of devwork or anything programming related, we've come to know many different kinds of staff groups, there's many that aren't around anymore but their legacy lives on through those that have experienced the work themselves or reminisce on the past. Again, not all the the work has been well received and many of it has been questionable throughout the relevant eras of Toribash, keep in mind that most of the staff work you DO get to witness is pretty much free volunteer work with some form of in-game compensation or means to make real money by selling TC, items, or allowed to work on commissions. VOLUNTEERING has done a fair share of extending the game's life expectancy as well, and many many players legend or not have done plenty to provide activity to the game and community.

Art, Modmaking, Scripting, Replaymaking, Video Editing, Tutorials/Guides, Event Hosting, Clan Activities, Strange Projects, are some of the areas of the game that have been blessed by creations and activity for decades. While not all aspects of content creation are as popular as others, there's been loads of player activity providing sustenance for the community to enjoy or bicker about long before I even signed up for the game.

Art has not EVER be an easy skill to attain or get into, 2D or otherwise. There's rulesets/principles to learn depending on what it is, and then you have to constantly apply the knowledge so it becomes second nature. Sometimes you have to know how and why something works just to bend/break the rules of art and come up with something unique.

Skills are a human based evaluation of measured effort and execution based on survival, cognitive processes, and a limited lifespan. AI is not capable of skill, it's literally in the name "artificial intelligence". The entire existence of AI is to mimic, not create. In relation to art, AI gets fed an insurmountable amount of copywritten material paired with graphical automation(from other programs) to train off of, in order to generate something similar using whatever algorithms and data structuring it's built with all while sitting in a data center or GPU farm. "Instead of all this" is essentially saying to hell with human activity and convert Toribash into a soulless AI toybox being puppeteered by scav's. You're quintessentially kicking down the door of a 20 year old space suggesting we all plug into the matrix of a false Toribash.

The game was never meant to be attractive to the general audience of gamers. It has it's own unique approach to physics coupling turn-based gameplay often marketed as a fighting game. The "ghost" that everyone uses that comes with the Tori? It's basically an onion mode that most animation or art software utilize, except realized in 3D so you know what's somewhat going on with joint selections and physics because you hand-craft EVERY movement.

Everything that is to be considered "lacking" or not user-friendly to make Toribash better has already been considered and made aware-of for Hampa and the devs that worked on Toribash. Want to know why a lot of it might not have been implemented yet? The answer could simply be that Nabi Studios doesn't have the consistent funding to provide the time for development. This can influence the availability to work on a game that utilizes an open-source physics engine PLUS proprietary systems and code.

In terms of the inability for standard users to easily make jointed sets, there's been hundreds of artists that have possibly existed in Toribash's lifespan that have tried. Primitive shapes with simplified UV unwrapping is as simple as it gets, not everyone has the capability to make art. This isn't even accounting for Item Forgers and the work they do as well. Plugging AI into a project file that can automate texture generation for the tori or AI art combined with hand-made art is terrible and removes the personality from equipping anything in the first place. This won't stop people from enjoying AI creations or trying to do AI justice though, because everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions.

There's many problems with AI art as well, such as the crazy amount of accountability issues surrounded by AI "art creators" claiming to make something original when the entire pipeline is theft-by-design plus some prompt. Before people could do it themselves there's been plenty of company's that trained AI on stolen art, the damage was done well before it was brought to users online.

Toribash is highly renown for self-accomplished activity within the community, for better or worse. If something was deemed impossible or too difficult, someone attempted to prove otherwise, most often changing the way everyone experienced the game if it was significant enough. If someone posted a creation or finding that didn't originate from them, the community would point it out or staff dealt with it if it broke rules. If a player got into the game and chose to share their progress with others, there'd always be someone that would try to help them out or point them in the right direction. This can range from the expansive history of gameplay, art, communication, and even staff duties. It's common to witness a path started by one, evolving into a journey shared by many overtime. The consistent connection between all efforts or engagements good and bad stems from human activity, without it there'd be no Toribash at all.
