Local mod is generally the best place to start on the staff, as you have minimum powers but still get a feel for dealing with other users. If you're pretty active in-game and enjoy it, I'd suggest GM, but due to the recent recruiting, you probably can't get it at this time. If you're experienced with the market or clans, MSquad or Clan Council will help, though it'll be harder to get those than local mod, and I doubt either of them need a new member. Uniteam is good if you like helping beginners, though once again, there was recent recruiting.
It all depends on what you like to do and are good at. For example, I was one of the first GMs when they merged TA and GK. However, I was rather inactive in-game and didn't enjoy doing tourneys or anything, so I quit (that and I didn't have the time for it). Used to have local mod in Beginner Sanctuary and Support too, before I screwed up a few times and was removed. Just remember that when you do actually apply for something, do every little job as best as you possibly can.
To sum up everything needed to get a staff job here: know the people, know the job, and give as much effort as you can.
Right, another piece of advice, don't put all of that "I want to help the community" dribble in your application. It was one of the reasons I got denied for SMod a while back. If you don't want to help the community, why apply for a staff job? Just make it short and sweet.
