Since when was a burqa required to be worn because of a religion? Last time I checked, the only reason they wore them because of the laws that they had to abide by in their original country.

You just completely missed what I said. I said that it was a law where they used to live. I never mentioned Britain.

It was required to be worn during a raid because of the Qur'an, not worn at all times. Apparently the men decided that it was better to just make them wear them all the time.

It's not my interpretation, it's what it actually states.

You apparently haven't done any research oh this to back up your arguments. Try using google, you can learn some things.

I did. I said I googled, read, and learned. Maybe you should do the same.

This type of dress has its origins with desert times long before Islam arrived. It had two functions. Firstly as a sand mask in windy conditions. This would be worn by men and women and is still common today. For women only the masking of the face and body was used when one group was being raided by another. These raids often involved the taking of women of child bearing age. With all women hidden behind a veil the chances of being taken were substantially reduced as the women of child bearing age could not be quickly distinguished from the very young and the old in the turmoil of fighting.

Many Muslims believe that the Islamic holy book, the Qur'an, and the collected traditions of the life of Muhammed, or hadith, require both men and women to dress and behave modestly in public. However, this requirement, called hijab, has been interpreted in many different ways by Islamic scholars and Muslim communities; the burqa is not specifically mentioned in the Quran.

Right there is the history of the burqa.

Kindly stop posting irrelevant bullshit in this thread, guys.

To points made regarding religious symbols: i have never and would never advocate a ban of any worn symbol or article of clothing unless it poses a tangible issue which goes beyond emotion.
One which covers half your damn body so that you look like a walking bag with no way for others to identify you seems like a problem to me.

muslim women aren't required to wear burkas, it's not even an "official" piece of clothing in islam. it's something sexist misogynist countries like iran or dubai invented to oppress their women. it's not a religious requirement, it's a law in those countries.

though that still doesn't explain why people wear burkas in egypt, where they're much more progressive etc, maybe they just want to or something. in which case i don't mind them wearing BOORKAS

EDIT: also, i haven't read any of the thread, in during bigotry

Thank you chac. I clearly stated the bolded way earlier and was flamed out by single-minded assholes.
