And about the ranking system don't know if you guys have done yet but if you ask for suggestion then I have one. So I was thinking and as I can explain better the things through visual examples, I did this:

Ok first, the people can be divided by groups, maybe sorted alphabetically. Lets say 25 players will participate. They'll go then in five groups and all the players will begin to do the first wave at the same time and so on. As every challenge is presented every two month, there will be time enough to make a voting every month.
The voting can be like a poll as you said and can be put as:

1st Challenge
G1                                         G2                    
Player A - 24                              Player F - 23
Player B - 28 [Winner]                     Player G - 20
Player C - 14                              Player H - 16               ======> G3. . . G5
Player D - 4                               Player I - 9
Player E - 22                              Player J - 27 [Winner]

The best of each group will won the 1st Challenge, then he/she will get 1 points as one challenge won, and so on with the other groups and the challenges. If a group gets a tie of wins by two or more people, they may do a bonus map or something to break the tie.
Example of how can be to pass the semifinals:
G1
Player A [2 waves won]
Player B [3 waves won]
Player C [2 waves won]
Player D [2 waves won]
Player E [1 waves won]_
Player B goes to the semifinals

Then the semifinals will be composed by the 5 best players of the groups. They will compete in the final challenge, the votes will come and the player with most votes will be the winner. The 2nd to 5th places will be sorted by the amount of votes. (still don't know what can be done if there's a tie in the votes.)
