There are some OGs legends who was recognized due to them being really skillfull. The perfect example would be Leyz or Ticux.
They were one of the first if not the first top notch mp players and the skill gap between them and majority of community was HUGE, they were skill gaming pioneers.
Diamond also got that cuz he was really good without competition in a while. But now we have loads of really strong players like Shev, iTemp, Kros etc.
If we will think "Toricredits earned from skill" those guys back in the days was DOMINANT, nowadays it is more like pouring huge TC bank from one cup to another, cuz all top duelers are good and their winning/losing is caused by unnoticeable things. (tho iTemp for me personally stands out)
In general getting legend status should be via being a community staple (e.g. Nirs) or being a pioneer in something.

UPD: Join Date has to do nothing with getting a piss name
I do agree that legend is a staple. I've had enough people discuss that here, so I will budge on that, but I will stand for the idea that they need to be recognized and or credited. Officially.
What you said about the diamond just made my earlier explanation tie back in.
I think it's generally unfair to I guess have that same idea of the TC being dumped from here to there because of how true that is, it's not really possible any other way way . The game is on the verge of death, yet the requirements stay the same. So theoretically. MP duelers will never get legend past the date of 2021 because the game just isn't giving them the outlet to show themselves off.
That's why I made my statement earlier about the join date: unlike replaymaking, you can come in late and still be recognized, because you have all the time and practice you can manage. Those who play MP don't have that luxury simply because of declining player counts. You cant show that you deserve a title. Its unfortunate and with how small and niche the community is it would be nice to acknowledge that
