From my experience, there is nothing that can possibly be a consolation. Nothing can quite compare to someone's life. However, you are not alone and your friend did not abandon you. He abandoned himself. There was nothing you could do. This may feel crushing for a while, but it will eventually liberate you. It's not your fault. You are still surrounded with people that love you. Take their embrace when it's offered.
