Well, the game can indeed survive without an active developer, as long as the community remains active, trading between players continues, the servers remain active, and no bugs are found that affect the economy or gameplay in general.
-----
All that is needed is a central orchestrator from the parent company (nabi) to handle the organization, recruitment, and management of the staff and events.
-----
But what can happen is exploitation by hackers without anyone ever discovering it if there isn't an active developer, either through the insertion of malicious code and scripts that only a developer with access to the game's code would be able to discover.
-----
Perhaps if the forum were disabled, it would help a lot, since a hacker attack on the forum could literally break the game... but it would also significantly affect and contribute to a faster decline in the game's standing with the community.

Yeah I get your point, and you’re not wrong, the game can go along without a dev for a bit as long as nothing major breaks. But that’s kind of the gamble. It only works while everything stays stable, and the moment something serious goes wrong, there’s nobody there to actually fix it (besides maybe hampa and maybe sir if he's still supporting the development until someone replaces him)

Community staff volunteers can keep events running and things organised, but that doesn’t really replace someone who can touch the code. Having Nabi just coordinate staff is more like maintenance mode, it keeps things moving, but it doesn’t solve deeper issues.

The security part is probably the biggest worry. Without an active dev, you’re basically hoping nobody finds something nasty and abuses it. And if they do, there’s no one with the access to properly look into it or patch it.

Disabling the forums might reduce risk, but that would probably hurt the game more than help. You’d be cutting off a huge part of the community just to lower the chance of something going wrong.

Obviously I'm sure sir still has access to most things to support potential risks or problems until another dev replaces him

Idk if this is real but if so how much does toribash cost?

If tb dies that would be extremely sad

Idk how the backend servers work or who pays for it but if all we need is money for that cant be too difficult to get that together.

Game is starved of players we simply require more, there are diff ways to do acquire them. Easy way is if more ppl make tb content but most of us dont have time to execute unless someone wants to make a channel and let us submit medal clips to it

Just fyi, getting access to game/server code won't make 20 years of data available after it's gone - and I doubt anyone's getting hands on it unless they buy out Toribash completely. And I'm not even speaking about (majorly useless, sorry) stuff that Nokia mentioned.

Once the servers go down, it's pretty much over for those who primarily play Toribash for its multiplayer aspect. SP players would only get slightly inconvenienced as their routine pretty much doesn't involve using any online functionality aside from occasional content sharing (which they would still be able to do on Discord or any other platforms) but for anyone who plays Toribash for any of its online features there'd be nothing left to do aside from playing a bunch of mods with no actual account system - that is, assuming there is a suitable version of the game server available.

As for the "they did servers for The Crew perhaps someone could do it for Toribash too" argument - no, you won't be able to do that unless you actually get the source code or a prebuilt version of a standalone game server that you can self-host. The Crew's multiplayer is/was P2P, you essentially "just" need to reverse engineer some bits of the lobby system to be able to make user clients connect to each other, you don't need to reinvent any of the game logic. Toribash multiplayer is authoritative, the game server is what's making everything work - it runs the simulation, it handles all the MP logic and so on.
