I've lost my job because I didn't have enough PTO to cover Clan League scheduling. I missed my daughter's dance recital because [xp] decided to force me to play judofrac at midday on a random weekday.
I'm going to be honest, friends. I'm not having a good time this Clan League. This group stage nonsense is a thinly veiled attempt to drive up engagement so that the game is not delisted from Steam.
Remember when Clan League was just a fun event every summer? You played your games, had shouting matches with your clanmates over VC because they pretended they'd practice, and then moved on with your life? Now it's a part-time occupation with mandatory overtime. I'm checking Discord more often I check my bank account or hell - my wife and children. My calendar has more Clan League obligations that actual work meetings before I was unemployed.
Every single conversation starts the same...
Fire: Can you play at 11:30?
visceral: No.
Fire: How about 12:15?
visceral: I'll be at a doctor's appointment.
Fire: Can you reschedule?
Brother, can you reschedule the fucking Earth's rotation?
Who looked at a perfectly functional tournament setup and though, "You know what this needs? A group stage that lasts the same length as an undergraduate degree.".
Every single week there's a new spreadsheet. A new availability poll. Another "actually we need to replay because someone forgot to turn on autosave or take screenshots". Another emergency substitution because Ponzo's cousin's wedding wasn't scheduled around Clan League.
And don't even get me started on judofrac. Why is it always judofrac that has the most inbred mouth-breathing neckbeard starters for every clan? Scheduling with judofrac mains always ends with, "Well the only time I'm available is Wednesday after 10:20 PM." Who the fuck are you people recruiting for judofrac? Retired lighthouse keepers? Astronauts on break? Duelers that are also part-time dog walkers?
I've developed muscle memory for opening Discord, checking pings, opening this thread to view results, and checking if the scheduled matches changed - and seeing that instead of starting in 2 hours, it started 30 minutes ago while I was asleep because people wanted to play "now".
My family has stopped asking if I'm free. They ask if Clan League allows visitation.
My therapist asked me to identify sources of stress and I accidentally linked the event page. I've started measuring time in rounds instead of days. My wife will ask me what day it is, and I will reply with Group Stage or Round of 16.
And before anyone claims it is just a game. It isn't. Last I checked, games don't require six scheduling threads on Discord, 2 backup schedulers, a Google sheet, availability poll, emergency substitutions, and a blood oath to be available between 8:17 and 12:39 on alternate Tuesdays. At this point I expect the next host update to include quarterly performance reviews, mandatory compliance training, and a Participant Experience panel discussion.
"Congratulations on reaching the quarterfinals. Please complete your annual anti-harassment module before queueing. The next round will be streamed by ConCon and Trestet so we will need everyone to be on their best behavior!

".
I miss when my biggest concern was whether I would perform well and put my clan in position to be competitive. Now my biggest cocnern is whether or not I need to explain to my (ex) employer that I require every Tuesday afternoon off because our opponents are only available during standard banking hours.
If this is the future of Clan League, I fully expect next year's iteration to require tax documents, proof of residency, and a goddamn fucking affidavit confirming my availability six months in advance.
Anyway, I'll see you all next weekend at 3:50 AM. I cancelled my grandmother's birthday for it.
