GRÜSS GOTT
I am back now. And now i'm going to do a massive quote of a post that i just posted in ORMO. HERE WE GO!
Oh, hello there. :U
I have now returned from Austria, mostly unharmed. First three days in Vienna were... HOT. The temperature was just way too high during the day, but quite good in the evening. Also worth noting is that Vienna is a beautiful city, much better than Aarhus that i live in. =P
However, on the fourth day, where we arrived in our rented apartment, i caught a cold. Wasn't that bad on the first day, but the next day i had a fever as well, which kinda sucked. Pretty much grounded me that day. Today, two weeks later, i'm still coughing and sniffling. >.>
But apart from my illness, we were out seeing something new pretty much every day, so i can't possibly remember everything. One of the more memorable moments were when we were inside the Dachstein glacier. It was cold and slippery, but also quite awesome. I mean, they had carved fuckin' Ice Age characters out of clear ice! And after we had been in there, we decided to go inside and have some food. While we were eating, a thunderstorm plowed by, obscuring our view outside and showered the building with hails at the size of ping-pong balls. Also worth noting is that we were 2.7 kilometers above sea level, so a thunderstorm is really quite dangerous. Noisy, but a cool experience.
Also, at Monday this week, we were up climbing on a mountain. Very rocky, but a lot more fun than a silly dirt path. Also got sunburnt on that mountain. When we got down, my nose was as red as a fuckin' tomato, literally. Didn't really hurt 'till we got back to the apartment, but then i found out that i had been sunburnt on my forehead, my neck (really painful :C), the back of my hands and a small patch on the back of my left upper arm, as well as my nose. Which really didn't make sleeping any easier. Doesn't hurt anymore, but now the skin is peeling off my nose. >.>

...

Oh yeah, at Friday, we saw a marmot. :I

All in all, it was a nice vacation. Austria needs moar liquorice, though.

I was in a salt mine as well. :U (Dürrnberg, if it rings any bells)
It was pretty cool, but also weird, because there was a small lake in there. Inside a mountain. I also had to duck half the time, due to my height and the tunnels' lack of such.

Also, moar glacier talk coming up!...
Inside that glacier, everything apart from the handrails was made of ice. Walls, floor, ceiling... All of it. It was also pretty awesome that there were two different types of ice: opaque and transparent. Seeing a diagonal stripe of transparent ice on an otherwise opaque ice wall is totally awesome. Words doesn't really do that place justice. I can only recommend it. But mind you, it was cold in there, i had to put on gloves. Here's the website, which contains a couple of images...

Looking into that crevasse was totally awesome.

Also, thanks, guys.

I also believe a part of it crossed the border into Austria.

Correct, all of it. Slides were hella fun.
And yeah, we did take a short trip to Germany down there. Pretty odd. There was a couple of signs in the tunnel mentioning that we were now crossing the Austria/Germany border.
We also had to wear some fugly safety clothes, but hey, better than having your own clothes get rubbed apart. I felt like a fucking snowman, because it was all white and extremely big. One size fits all and stuff. It also had some brown-ish stains on it, but i'd rather not have to think of how they got there.
At the beginning and end, we also rode some carts into the mine. Noisy and uncomfortable, but it's better than walking.

Yup, they do actually call it the Dachstein Ice Palace. Very beautiful, that palace part, but a lot smaller than you'd think. We were only in there for 30-60 minutes, and we took two rounds during that time. I'm just surprised that they hadn't carved Mozart or Kaiser Franz Josef into the ice, though. =P
An added bonus was that following thunderstorm that we narrowly evaded. Those hails were so big that you could track the individual hails with your eyes, right until it shattered against the windows or the ground. Once again i must state that it would have hurt like hell to be out in. Like getting pelted with small rocks at high speeds. But seeing it from a safe position was pretty awesome.
