I know this thread was around in the old debate, but seeing how passionate i am about this subject i can't refrain from re-creating it here, now that debate is gone. I just want it to be around in case any new info pops up or if someone else has something to say.
I think we are approaching by far the biggest leap for mankind, full of exciting opportunities and dangers as well. I will once again post a very interesting series titled "Technocalyps" which was put together by Frank Theys. It's collection of interviews of famous scientists, doctors and sociologists as well as presentation of developing technologies which will greatly impact our lives in foreseeable future. The term "technocalyps" refers to the end of our biological existence; when people will essentially abandon their bodies and become their technology.
Without further ado, here is a first part of the film, dealing with (relatively) near future.
Feel free to express all your excitements, concerns, and thoughts in general.
Ok, I'll bite the bait and be the 'against' argument. What's to stop the computers to 'take over' and control us. Assuming that computers have advanced a LOT from now till then but you get the point. Also bump. (I would write a longer response but I need to go memorize vocab[Which, btw would be very, very easy if I had a robobrain <_< do want]).
Dun dun dun...
The idea is that we will eventually 'merge' with computers rather than stay as separate 'users' and 'tools'. Like your last sentence implies....computerized brain, with direct access to pretty much all knowledge of mankind. But this won't come right away of course.
There are many nuances which doesn't even exist yet, so it's hard to think up solutions to them :P
"It's not natural."
"If God had wanted us to have robo-brains then we would have been born with them."
Or perhaps he would have made it so we had the ambition and intelligence to make them ourselves
Same exact argument could be used for transport also. "If god wanted us to go that fast, he would have made us with wheels lololo"
Glasses are not natural, as is cloth, shoes and just about anything else.
Forgetting for a second that nature incorporates everything, from beehives to plastic bags ;)

Yeah i wish it was public. I'd definitely mess around with it.
already voiced my oppinions on this when it was in debate.
basically, it will get to a stage when everybody will have the same stuff and no one is an individual anymore. no achievment will be based on human ability. its like cheating...
Not really.
I think i even addressed your point in old debate thread.
There will be many various body models and enhancements available from various providers.
"I'm a Mac. I'm a PC!" thing will never stop.
And even if everyone were exactly the same functionally, difference doesn't have to be mechanical, it can be in appearance.
Think of toribash + textures.
can you imagine going into a bar and getting into a fight with someone "I HAVE THE K-ARM 5000 IL HIT YOU LANK HARD BRU!" "WELL I HAVE THE P-760 ALI-BOOTS IL DODGE YOU BRU!"
saying things like "i benched 120kg today, il hit u lank hard bru" WILL BE ABSALOUTLY IRRELEVANT!
Why would it be anymore irrelevant than it is today?
the thing called our EGO will be a thing of the past. i like my ego =<
Not really. Nothing will change in dick measuring department.
Just like modern guy can brag how much he can bench due to his genetics and the hours he spent at the gym, a transhuman can brag how strong he is because he got his hands on new model of nano-muscle pectorals or whatnot.
As Deus Ex prophecied, all such will end in a War between transhuman and normal, resulting in our world collapsing, because there will always be some normal left to resist, while the transhuman will be slowly defeated.
I highly doubt this is a plausible scenario.
Everyone will want to improve themselves, and groups that will refrain will just die out because of inability to compete with their smarter, stronger, healthier, sexier counterparts. Just like Amishes do.
The very core idea of transhumanism is to surpass limits set to us by nature.
