Google Wave.

Google is saying it will replace e-mail...I have my doubts. Discuss?

EDIT: Though is pretty damn cool...

EDIT2: Also holy hell, never heard of Google web toolkit, but that is awesome...idk any sort of html or web language, but i can see the potential something like that can bring to the table...*currently watching all of this vid for the first time.*

Google wave sounds like a supa-nerd? Also, if you arent going to watch it, what the hell is the point in posting about it? I watched the vid in two sittings, and you dont have to watch every second of it to see that it actually DOES have some pretty revolutionary potential.

bah, skip halfway through or something. They spend a lot of time making terrible "jokes" and their equipment borks enough to sort of take some of the steam out of their presentation, but it IS pretty damn cool.

Well, from what I gathered it is like taking the basic principal of a forum, and of e-mail, and of instant messaging and mixing them altogether while at the same time expanding on them.

At parts in the video they mention that the majority of the source code for Wave is open, so what they are trying to do is completely change the way people communicate by spreading and ultimately replacing our normal methods with one all inclusive one.

The best way I can think to describe it is that instead of e-mails or IMs, there would be waves which not only function identically to both, but also can include as many people as you like, branch off at anytime, be embedded just about anywhere on the web, and with the code being open will be able to be improved on endlessly.

They demo a couple of the addons already written for wave in the video, and after seeing them I cant help but wonder if eventually this could also do away with sites like myspace and facebook.

And tell my friends to use it also.
I've read an article about it, and seriously...It rocks. It will replace all insta-messagers and e-mail, and put everything in one place!
We should start a Toribash campaign, and make everyone use it ;3

Yeah, I mean, the way it is looking this will integrate right into the forums, its kinda one of those things that seems eminent. Finally someone who knows what it is :P It is really difficult to explain without just saying "read this" or "watch this"

I watched nearly half of it and it sounds really interesting. This also gave me motivation to start program more myself and I will also try "Google Web Toolkit".
If it will replace email: Hard to say if it is really going to replace email. If it is going to replace it, it is going to take time for people to start using it and understanding that it is actually better than the old email system. Also, other companies will surely try to beat their attempt to take over the email system.
Googles "goal" if they have any might be the best in everything in the electronic topic. They first succeeded to make the best search engine over the Internet. Their search engine are "best" in many different ways. Most people are using it. They are using the best techniques for finding new websites and add the description to them etc. I'm sure most people would agree to that.
They have released satellite pictures from all over the world (Google Earth) and are the biggest and the only ones doing that too? Now they have started to make mobiles (android) and they have a good chance to be the best mobiles.
So actually, I think they will succeed replacing email with "Wave".

Thats why they are making it open source. They WANT other companies to adopt the system, but put their own spin on it.
