Nudity being so taboo
I always found it a bit amusing.
In ancient Greece human form was glorified, and depictions of naked men and women decorated many public places. This was also true to Rome, although to a lesser extent. Even Gladiatorial and Olympic competitions were in nude.

Of course, clothing predated all that. Originally intended to protect us from the elements, it also very conveniently concealed some 'imperfections' of our bodies and as time went on it began to represent our social status, taste, and even political affiliation. Over millenniums we have grown so attached to the conveniences it provides, imagining people going about their day naked seems absurd now. Like turtles without shells.

The spread of Abrahamic religions didn't help nudity either. It further cemented the notion that nudity is taboo - a sin even. God hates when people don't cover how they actually look, or chop a piece of skin from their genitals or whatnot.

I think the western world is very slowly sobering up and nudity becomes more tolerated. Of course, nudity still bears the mark of guilt and obscenity that peer pressure and religion has placed on it. It's precisely why it's "naughty" and why she has been a "bad girl" and will be punished tonight. It's burned in our psyche.

"Think of the kids!" they yell. The kids will feel whatever society tells them to feel about nudity. If they sense it's deemed immoral and obscene, they will in time adopt exact same view. Many of the indigenous people in warm parts of the world don't wear any cloth whatsoever, and i doubt it messes them up mentally. Even in civilized parts of the world.....If you've ever been to a nudist beach, you surely noticed that people there stopped regarding nudity as anything out of the ordinary. You were one of the few noobs there who got a boner. That's because, as i implied above, our perception is largely shaped by our peers.
Now if a man/woman walks outside naked (especially if they are sexually attractive) it would cause quite a distraction. However, this is only due to reason i stated above.

So yeah, there. Discussion was becoming stale, and this was the only thing i could think of at the moment.

PS: Honestly though, i just felt like putting tits in my avatar.

I'm not proposing everyone has to walk naked or anything.
All I'm saying is that society is much too paranoid with blocking how homo sapiens look without cotton or animal material on them.
If someone has the confidence to go outside naked, he will get fined for 'indecent exposure'. Apparently human bodies in their entirety are indecent.

Nice troll post, RDM.

But I'll reply.

Clothes have a lot of purposes, like protection, comfort, style, etc, and I don't really see the advantages of running around in the nude. Why SHOULD we tolerate it? So it was more widely accepted two thousand years back- so was the theory that small animals spontaneously generate and that the Earth is the center of the universe.

I'm saying it should be tolerated.
And not just in the cases when a cute neighbor girl with perky tits runs around the neighborhood - also when a fat hairy Joe decides to go check his mail in the nude. Nudity is not an affliction - it's the default state.

I already listed the benefits cloth provides. That said, when something is beneficial, must it be forced on everyone? Smoking is not beneficial. Let's make it illegal. Eating junk food is not beneficial. Let's ban it. Breathing city smog is not beneficial. Let's make that illegal. Going out in winter without a hat is not beneficial. Let's make it illegal too. Examples are multiple, varying from little things to life-long habits.

I think clothing is almost a physical adaption, a trait of evolving intelligence- after all, no animals have clothing.

...And? Woop-dee-doo?
If we stopped wearing clothing, i trust we wouldn't regress back to picking lice off each other's back in caves. Cloth's original purpose was to help us survive the cold. Now that has almost become a secondary purpose, right after covering our genitals.
Admittedly, most animals have natural 'clothing', fur or scales, but they're typically limited to mild climates or one type of extreme climate as their habitat, whereas clothing lets humans be more versatile in our habitat locations. We could live in the hottest tropics, the coldest arctics, the driest deserts and the most humid floodplains. I think in general clothing is an advancement.

Again, redundant babble. I know the function of clothing and recognize the importance it has played in human survival and adaptation to other regions. too bad that has nothing to do with the point I'm making.

tl;dr: Doing something for no reason at all that could actually be detrimental to your health is illogical and in extension just plain stupid. Why accept that?

No reason? What about satisfaction?
It's like saying drinking alcohol should not be accepted because it can be very detrimental. Life is about satisfaction and fulfillment of one's desires. Alcohol may be detrimental to your health, but it serves a purpose nonetheless. Amusingly, it was developed all over the world just like clothing.

Another benefit easing up on nudity would bring is increased awareness of one's own health. I'm willing to bet obesity rate would decrease drastically.

It's a long shot, but it makes sense.
Again, that same peer pressure effect. It's an awesome motivating force. Seeing Bob and Maggie's fit bodies will push Cindy "the 260 pound 7th-grader" to get her ass on a treadmill so she can compete with other girls. Clothing hides the results of sitting on your computer chair and eating hot pockets all day, and thus hinders your motivation. Yes yes, bad genes contribute too, but you get the point.

I'm not trying to say i know for certain, but i think it would have effect in the long run.

Trust me, he's done it before and admitted of trolling himself. He wrote some silly irrelevant stuff there and i know he could do better if he was serious.

Trust me, there are a lot of the effects you're not seeing when they have XXXL shirt on. For better or for worse.

PS: and guys, once again.....I don't want to make the world a nudist colony. I just think the reason why it's not accepted (illegal, frankly speaking) is silly, and i do think easing up on this phobia could bring benefits to all.

If nudity was standard, I'd spend the day with my face on a window, jerking off constantly. I'm 100% sure most fatties would do the same.

I'm not a greek statue myself (although more on skinny side) but perhaps if it was like that already you would not have been overweight to start with. Imagine if nudity was frank as you were growing up. The main point of this thread was concerning legality and ability for a person to be nude - improvement of overall fitness was just one of the possible perks i suggested after Ragdollmaster brought up benefits.

Making it legal and or acceptable is much different then making it a requirement. The point of Odlov's argument is to say that people should be more accepting of nudity. Not destroy clothing and become a nude colony. That's extremely ludicrous.

To the obese: I am not obese, quite the opposite, im "a shrimp". I am very small and slender. But say an obese person decides "I don't want people to see me like this, I don't like being naked". That's okay. They can walk around and perform all their daily activities with clothes on. What I believe (and I think Odlov does as well), is the tolerance of nudity should be heightened.

Someone made a point earlier on as I was reading through this thread stating (this is paraphrased) "A game with one sex scene in it would be rated much higher then when you kill thousands of people in a video game". That's absolutely right and it's ridiculous. I can't see a nude person in a movie at the movie theaters because I am not of age but I can go there and watch one man dismantle machinery, kick in people's faces, and blow up countries? That's insanity.

"Think of the children". A quote from Odlov's first post. My point is: think of what the children are going to find out once they turn say 9 years old: Boys have a penis, Girls have a vagina, Girls have larger breasts, Girls have periods. And babies come from sex. They will find that out before they know how to find the square root of 9. So what's the big deal? It shouldn't be deemed gross.

The purpose of clothing isn't what's up for debate here. We all know it. But as Odlov said: People use clothing nowadays to show their social class, their political stances, etc. etc. If we truly wish to unify each other, why not wear the same uniform we were all born with? Our skin.
