The disscussion board and the odd way people talk on it.
O.k., I understand that this board is for formal debate. But really, why the hell do people feel the need to write like they are some sort of Victorian Englishman. Do you really say "Tis" irl? I mean I guess if you are Irish I can buy that, but I'm guessing for the most part you don't speak like that, so why debate like that?

Imo an argument is much more convincing when it is written in clear, modern language. It is one thing if you are talking about something technical, something that has a limited vocabulary surrounding it, but if you say "Tis a fantastic automobile which doth deliver frozen dairy products to the youth of my neighborhood" when you could just say, "I like the ice cream truck" you end up losing credibility because you are more concerned with sounding smart than making good point...

Just something to chew on.

I was raised in a traditionale English environment, and thus i feel burdoned to express myself as an english gentleman ought to. In fact i dictate unto my butler, who doth write my posts for me.

(but all the europeans/americans who speak like that can go fuck themselves. you know who you are.)
I wouldst verily suggest that it is merely the uncivilised colonists who are offended by such diction. True gentlemen are loquacious and speak in a sophisticated manner.
I'm one of those annoying people who types like he talks. Thank fuck I have an adequate grasp of the language or I'd look like a simpleton.

That is kinda my point. I mean, when all is said and done it doesn't really matter. I guess it just irks me when I see it because it is using what most people would consider to be obscure language when there is no need for it and it is easy to try to use that to add a fake validity to an argument. It's like Denis Miller, he will use obscure ass references that barely hold together just because he knows not many people know about them and it makes him sound intelligent.

Again, I understand that people from different parts of Europe say "Tis" and other things I myself might not be used to, and honestly if this forum is improving peoples grammar I say "MAOR" (which I never say irl :P) God knows mine is nowhere near perfect...but it was a thought I had after reading some posts and I figured I would see what people had to say about it.

Again, just something to chew on.

._.

Just because I'm educated...

"thus·ly (sl)
adv. Usage Problem
Thus.
Usage Note: Thusly was introduced in the 19th century as an alternative to thus in sentences such as Hold it thus or He put it thus. It appears to have first been used by humorists, who may have been echoing the speech of poorly educated people straining to sound stylish. The word has subsequently gained some currency in educated usage, but it is still often regarded as incorrect. A large majority of the Usage Panel found it unacceptable in an earlier survey. In formal writing thus can still be used as in the examples above; in other styles this way, like this, and other such expressions are more natural."

Keep fuckin that chicken :P also, case and point.

chac...idk, I don't go to wikipedia much.

Anyways, I can see that this has gone way off course, I started with a simple idea, trying to say something about using complex language when it might not be needed, it's kind of a basic principle of rhetoric, but whatever, people have gotten offended. My bad. I think I have stated my points, and I don't much care to keep this going since it is clearly being misread.
