I was just going to pull a quote off that deleted post but instead I'm going to just rant my major objection to all discussion that relate to 'god' or religion.

Some one always comes out with something about "the truth" as if they're correct.

Each to their own, religion is a belief etc but don't be coming out saying that your religion is "the truth" cos simply put it isn't. You can't prove that you're right until after you're dead, and that's not going to achieve anything. Seriously.

Believe whatever you like, but don't be telling people that it's "the truth". That's a fallacy if I've ever seen one.

Saying that god can not predict the future puts a giant limit on his abilities. If that is in fact the case, i would argue he is no longer omnipotent or omniscient.

Imagine this scenario:

One of god's goals is to preserve mankind.
God creates a man named Bob. Since god can only consider present factors and is not able to infer the future, he doesn't know that in 40 years Bob will cause a nuclear holocaust and end mankind's existence. What kind of omnipotence is that? He doesn't even have the knowledge (and ability) to securely reach his own goals.

um since when did the creator of the universe be bound by the 'laws' of it?

I admitted that the argument was only as good as those that take universal laws and apply them to pre-universal conditions.
It is merely meant to highlight yet another known fact that god's existence contradicts.

As a rough (and pretty unfitting) metaphor, how can I prove to you that 2 + 2 = 4 if you don't believe in math? You have your reasons for your beliefs, and you're pretty firmly entrenched in them from what I can see, but it wouldn't hurt to extend them out a bit, would it? You don't have anything preventing you from doing so, do you?

Thanks for the compliment.

I don't have to believe a text to analyze it. In fact, wouldn't the analyzing part have to come first, before me taking a particular stance? Sure. It would be foolish of me to dismiss it off hand and risk eternity in hell. I'm willing to bet every atheist who knows what's good for him has done his share of evidence-weighing.

Comparing mathematics and a text isn't a very good analogy, tbh

I will extend my views when/if i see enough reason to do so ;)

That instantly served as a STFU back then and still does now.

Fucking win

Also, odlov, I wish you luck, but I can only see this thread being decent for a few more hours, probably when you fall asleep or something, an then it will be over run with shite. Again, best of luck, and I admire your optimism here, but something I have known for a bit and that has been hammered home by these forums is that you cannot argue logic against belief's.

HOWEVER, I was also once a believer, and it was in no small part thanks to the wise words of others that I began to question things...so good luck fighting the good fight.

EDIT damnit! I couldn't resist the debate :/

So God made a mistake?

You can't prove god and you can't disprove it. State your belief and fuck off.

While that sounds all good and peachy in theory, there are so many separate arguments dealing with the issue that it would be impossible to ram them all into one thread. Just the last section of my OP can easily become a separate thread.

Those of you who don't enjoy the discussion or find it annoying - don't let me keep you here a moment longer

To save typing space, here are your answers. One short, one longer:

40 second video
4 minute video

We know full well how and by whom paintings and buildings are made, and we can even infer specific facts about them by analyzing style and paint chemistry.

On other hand, if the paint was made of organic microbes who could reproduce and mutate (and a specific painting was a state which increased microbes chance of survival) then they would arrange themselves into said painting over time. This, of course, is an analogy of evolution.

Is my OP disrespectful in any way? Did i call someone bad names?
Hmmm....Seems to me all i did was present the arguments.
If you can't contain your butthurt, there are numerous other threads you may turn your attention to.

Np Im kinda hoping that with the amount of time you put into the first post, this might become a sort of mega thread where all the less planned "god" threads end up...that would be nice.

But I do also see sproojs point that a pro god thread would most likely have been locked by now, and that is a tad unfair. But, meh, its the internet, things arent fair here.

Also, Torzila, aye, that's just a catchy phrase someone came up with. Your best bet for getting a decent argument going is to try to prove that god is somehow responsible for science and the things it has shown us. I can't do it, but that would do the trick certainly.

I'm offended :' (
Such a thing wouldn't happen under my watch.
I'd never close a thread which puts forth some arguments for existence of god - nor any thread which advocates position i don't like.
Last edited by Odlov; Feb 6, 2010 at 07:53 AM.
Well, and ultimately that is the reason they get closed. Because all of the arguments used are less than founded. And if its any help, the thread I am thinking of wasnt closed by you anyway.

Correction: i wouldn't close any thread with arguments for god.
Even arguments i deem weak or invalid.

But, enough of that.
