Film: Its degredation and shite.
First watch this bit of epic amazing in motion.

Since we are here, and to keep this thread from being moved to wibbles, how about we disscuss the trite and shity things that clog up so many movies. Personally I have found that maybe one of every 30 movies released into major circulation is good, and the rest are basically this. Anyone else get that feeling?

How many of them are good? Not in the sense of 'were they good back then?' but in the sense of 'are they good now?'. Very few 'classic' movies made back then would be considered good in modern standards. If someone made Die Hard now it be considered a terrible movie, but because it was considered incredible when it was made, people today think it is one of the greatest movies ever.

Good point, but at the same time I dont think you are being exactly fair. Even if a movie is made with "perfect" acting and effects and music etc...it might still lack innovation, which is the thing I think is severely lacking in most films. If you mean that we have gotten closer to perfecting the asthetic aspect of film, I agree, and with movies like Avatar there have obviously been innovations made, but at the same time most of the other movies made and released on a large scale are either cleverly re-packaged ideas, or out and out re-makes of once "great" movies.

Here is a clip from Metropolis, before talkies and the like. Its is the sort of movie you talk about, and while a good deal of it does rely on putting into context with the time it was made, it also kept my interest the entire time, and has a rather complex bit of subversion to its plot.

True, and that has led to some pretty lame attempts to do something new.

What.
no. People come up with great new stuff all the time. Especially independent film makers. Actually the diversity in both plot and presentation has branched out a lot more in later years than it ever did in the old days.

Oh and indie film makers do make good movies, btw. Just because you aren't open minded enough to go and watch them, it doesn't make them bad.

I personally have no trouble at all with watching a movie about something that's been done a thousand times, it's still entertaining to me. Seeing as there's usually a big difference in the way the plot is worked out, even though it's a big cliché. In fact, I dare say he cliché makes it just that bit more enjoyable. Some movies just feel like they're outright missing something, the familiar cliché.

tl;dr stop whining about movies, they've still got explosions and hot actresses.

Balls to both of you xD When done right movies can be more than entertainment, they can be social commentary, which imo is the most important aspect of any sort of creative endeavor. Not to downplay movies that are strictly entertainment, everything has a place after all, but it sucks that that is largely what is focused on in main stream cinema.

Most movies follow a specific formula, and not only is not creative, it loses its entertainment value very quickly. Its odd because the only place to get good movies anymore (for the most part) is independent film. Without the motive of profit, they are free to experiment and have plots that actually make a point. If you want hot chicks, why not just watch pr0n? Explosions? get a video game.

Well, Avatar has an incredibly cliche plot and it's still, in a way, a social commentary (Westerners vs Native Americans, etc). Nothing new, though.

But yeah.
I think there are 3 types of movies:
1. Movies that are produced solely to make $$$ and target mainstream audience. Generally contain lots of action, run-of-the mill slapstick humor, average acting and predictable plot. (thousands of examples. From "meet the spartans" to "meet the fockers" to your copy-paste action and chick flicks that come out every 2 months)
2. Movies that contain intricate plot and subtle underlying themes which target lesser market (2001 Space Odyssey, Return (2003), Seventh Seal, One flew over Cuckoos Nest, Solyaris (1972), There Will be Blood, A History of Violence, etc.)
3. Versatile type of movie that combines elements which appeal to both the general public and movie connoisseurs. (Godfather, The Shining, Misery, Pulp Fiction, Idiocracy, Clockwork Orange, etc)

PS: naturally my examples are based on my own experiences - get over it

There are new original movies, but most of them fly under the radar unless you actively look for them. Many of them are indie works.

Its like air bud but with a really awesome crab costume.

I watched Antichrist the night I made this thread btw. Kind of inspired this, all shock value and odd plot happenings aside, that movie impressed the fuck out of me.

ye, and that sucks. It went from being the only place film was made to being a crap factory. Granted it was crooked and they treated actors like slaves when it started, but still.
