Everything happens for a reason?
Well, this is an outlook I have been on both sides of throughout the course of my life, and decided that I wanted to see where most people stand on it. The gist of the idea is that everything that happens, even bad things, always have some purpose, usually in a higher/spiritual way. For now its just an open poll, but feel free to express why you feel either way.

I can elaborate on my choice if you really want to read my ramblings.

EDIT: O.k. so either I have gone completely blind/stupid and cant remember how to make polls, or they have been disabled. I guess just post what you think then.

I think everything does NOT happen for a reason.

The poll options are too specific.

I don't think anything happens because some deity planned it, yet i don't think the universe is random OR uninteresting.

lol, yeah, uninteresting doesn't really apply :P

I think all events within the universe are causally determined, and yet I think this chain of causality is what it is for no reason whatsoever; ergo random.

I have thought about this before, and random is the answer you get regardless of whether you believe a god planned it all, because if god is the unmoved mover then his own desires and abilities which have led to creation of the universe are necessarily random.

So what?
Answer this question: why is this god what he is?
When you realize that the only thing you can say is "just because", you will understand why i arrived at my conclusion.
Ugh, no...just no.
the idea of some supreme being predetermining my fate is anathema to me, not to mention the fact that it sounds totally ridiculous. I like to believe that i am responsible for my own actions and choices and not just fob them off on ' it was gods will' or some other equivelent.

so...Determinism?

Yeah.

More on OP though: reason requires context. If you ask whether everything happens for a reason, you are asking about a reason for whole reality. Since reality is all-encompassing, it can't have any context, or reason for being what it is. As such, I can give you a relative explanation of why certain things occur, but if you are looking for a deep underlying reason, you are wasting your time.

Here, I actually made a topic on the subject on philosophy forum:

Read the first reply, it's very helpful.

All religion aside, I do believe everything happens for a reason , in terms of bodily, mental, and physical reasons, why do we eat, cus we are hungry, why do we do random things, because our mind gives us a want to do so.

I think you are thinking more causality than "for a reason" in that it fits in to some bigger, all encompassing plan. I should have clarified in the first post that by reason I mean as part of a plan :P my bad.

Also, as for religion. It might not ever be stated anywhere in the bible or any other book of any other religion. But if said belief system happens to have an all knowing creator, than it logically follows that even if he doesn't make things happen, he certainly allows them to, which can be seen as just as bad in many cases. It's different if yu are talking about Greek Gods and the like, who were essentially just as shitty, or shitter than humans, but also had special powers.

You are missing the key implication of divine foreknowledge.
If god knows all our choices beforehand, that means that from his perspective our choices are set in stone, even before we are born.

Going by Judeo-christian dogmas (which repeatedly refer to god's omniscience and design), nothing anyone can ever do wasn't already planned by the creator. You are all actors unknowingly reading a script written by someone else (that is, if we assume god exists).

Here's a good video on the topic:
