Need Help With Computer
Hi, I have been trying to play Modern Warfare 2 on my computer for a few days now after have been playing the game fine since December.

I am experiencing incredibly low FPS in my games, to the point in which it's virtually unplayable.

My first step was downloading the newest graphics card for my Nvidia 8800 GeForce GTS. I then chose "High Performance" settings.

I then found a good amount of success with the FPS, though it was still laggy.

I, for the fun of it, then turned UP the resolution, textures, etc. This made the game run even faster and higher fps. Which puzzled me.

I then downloaded the new directx v.10 rather than the 9.0. And, I upgraded from 2 gigs of ram to 3 gigs. The most my computer can handle in 32-bit.

I then reinstalled the entire game.

I chose "Optimal Settings", as it suggested, hit play, and it's soo low on FPS that it literally takes about 45 seconds for it to recognize my mouse moving.

I have ran checks for spy-ware and viruses and have found nothing.

Please get this thing going again.

Voxus:

1) Why/how do I go back to 9.c?

2) They are for sure 8xx series drivers

3) I took out my 2 1 gig sticks out and put in 2 2 gig sticks in that my friend and I found compatible via some program.

Homer: I couldn't find the files in steam to save my life.

Everyone else: I tried installing the 9.0c. I ran the program. It asked where to extract the files. I said desktop. Now I have a shit ton of bins that make no sense to me such as "dxnt", and I can't see that it's installed in my add/remove programs list.

Help! Not to sound ungrateful, I just get really on edge when my computer doesn't work and currently I can't play one of my favorite games.

*Edit* Somehow, I found a file to make it run, and it downloaded. Still don't see it under my programs list. Also: MW2 runs now, but I have soo much jitter and low fps.

I can safely tell you 1 month ago my computer ran the game flawlessly.

I maxed out my ram on this computer, my graphics card is an 8800 Geforce GTS Nvidia so I can safely assume it can run this (I am thinking of buying a 9800 when I get the money), I honestly am looking for any possible ideas to raise fps.

doubtful, i have seen problems similar to this mainly due to the amount of running processes in the background, if you can open up task manager and see how many total there are it would give a good idea what's going on when you run a game. also a screenshot with all the processes would be preferable

it may not be virus related but it could be process related if you have 30-50 processes running even with 3-4gb of ram

I was considering purchasing a 9800 from Nvidia as newegg.com suggested; however, a free solution would be splendid.

Dear lord that'd be a world of what the hell to simply get this gaming runner optimally.

Interestingly enough, the farther I turn up the graphics, the higher my fps.

voxus that's a long solution if what i'm saying is true

first) see how many running processes there are in the background

second) find out if any of them are taking x amount of your processor at a time

third) post a screenshot here so i can see and help

fourth) disable the processes running that would be bogging you down (if any) through msconfig

fifth) run disk cleanup THEN defragment hdd

after this quick guide all should work that much more smoothly and you wont have to reinstall windows (although that option would work it takes longer)
