Not trying to make you feel bad about your work, just want to see you come out with the best results you can.
I used combination of shades, filters, brushes, eraser, dodge and the burn tool to get this result. Even tho this isn't a high level avatar it made a great effect with the combination of those tools.
I used a background grabient and thats pretty much it with no filters xD
GIMP doesnt really have many filters that get good results without completely distorting the piece. And dont worry, i know my artistic skills using a computer are poor but blame sorriso, he put me up to this D:
The avatar you showed seems to distorted for my liking. Im not denying its good, because it really is :L but i just think an avatar should look pretty basic as oppose to lots of FX. the tori seems warped towards the right and the transparency makes for better artwork but doesnt showcase the actual tori, which is the point of one of these icons :S

What kind of filters? i mean, theres stuff like cunism and impressionism on GIMP which completely cocks up the piece. Then theres filters like blur and shadow which i have used but i didnt think would be appropriate for this. I'll Experiement after ive finished vendetta's and eco's new one

Missuse: All of that is possible but my concern is that i would have to do the same for everyone to make them all the same.
