In-game Chat Settings
This might be mainly used by room operators, users who wish to disconnect themselves from the current discussion/argument within their current room, communication with clan mates, friends, and for ease of finding particular line(s) of chat that interest a user.

So what I'm suggesting is simple; there would be several chat options situated at the bottom left of your screen (like the [game] button is currently), and they would read [All], [Public] , [Game], [Private], [Clan]

[All] would display everything, except for Operator commands if selectively visible.

[Public] would display all the chat (words typed by other users) visible to every other user in the room.

[Game] would display commands used, wins and loses (like they happen now), and Operator commands might just be visible to the GMs and Operators in the room.

[Private] would display whispered chat, possibly branching off to show the different users' titles (names).

[Clan] would display chat from your clan members throughout the game (not selectively within your current room).

Here's an example taken from Runescape.

Please discuss this suggestion in a positive manner.

Cheers.

To find a list of the commands you have to search for it, or ask another user who may or may not know.
There is no built-in list of commands showing all of them.

@Butler153, yeah I'd agree with that. An ability to right-click on a select chat/button and disable/enable (off/on) could be helpful too. And yes, ideally you'd be able to speak to your clan members without having to join the room they're in in order to do so.
Here's an example, taken from Runescape.

There could even be more options, such as [Clan].

@Nigma:
-But the problem with using /chl is that, at least in my case, is that it has been buggy, giving me no obvious way to return to the room's chat.

-Not everyone knows the commands, and having this implemented would provide an easier alternative.

-With a 'create a conference' option, I believe that would be nice, but there is always irc. Too many options might mean clutter, but that's certainly a good idea.

Too add onto this there should be 2 different tabs

Publicisplayed to people in current server

Clanisplayed to your clan members currently ingame

I know its not that hard,a majority of games have it.
Can I code it?
Hell no I'm 12.

@Velair, I do believe that implementing this would not take too much effort, and yes, many other games already have these types of options.

@4kid, the reasons for these additions are fluidity and pleasure of gaming experiences. I'm sure users would not wish to have to sift through lines and lines of text to find a reply from another user, or the outcome of a previous match. Why make a user have to scroll up and down the text, trying to find something, when this process could be made so much simpler?

@tictacky2, I believe Toribash does need this, because as it is, this game is not overly user-friendly. With the steep learning curve that comes with this game, do you really think users wish to have to deal with an under-simplified commands system? To find a list of the commands you have to search for it, or ask another user who may or may not know. There is no built-in list of commands showing all of them.

Damn, actually never thought of this, I do play Runescape and the chat function is really good, maybe also add the function to turn off clan chat or public chat if the room or your clan starts spamming. If this chat function were to be implemented, it would definitely make toribash easier. Like say your clan members are in another room and it's full, you could just speak to them through clan chat instead of trying to join the room to talk to them.

<Icky> Butler is the worst es
<Reta> can I fire him yet ?
If you were able to create a multi-way conversation on irc using these functions, then that would be beneficial. Although there are already, more or less, private ircs used for such things, it wouldn't hurt.

In theory it would be as simple as typing a chat room name (eg, [Clan], [Public]) into an input box and you would be able to chat on that channel - while in-game.
