You already established that you're using gimp right.
See Paul i'm a Fortune teller i know you're using Gimp 2.8, the pressure opacity (which is that magic that makes everything look smooth) does work, Gimp just happen not to recognize your tablet

Quick solution for this life defying corruption can easily be corrected by opening Gimp, hit edit>preferences>input devices.
Click configure input devices and then !Tadaa! Gimp should be all cool and recognize your shit.
