3D item recall
There is a lot at stake for both Toribash and our upcoming Steam release. Your help would be appreciated, so please read this carefully.
DUE TO VARIOUS COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENTS, WE ARE ASKING ALL OWNERS OF 3D OBJECT ITEMS TO DEACTIVATE THEM AND REFRAIN FROM PLAYING ONLINE UNTIL THE ITEMS HAVE BEEN RECALLED. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN THE TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF YOUR ACCOUNT UNTIL THE SITUATION IS RESOLVED.
As you know March Madness is over and we are sorry to announce things have not turned out how we hoped, much to our dismay. So here it is right from the beginning.
One of the latest features of Toribash is 3D items that can be equipped on a character, bringing player customization to an entire new level. We wanted to host a fairly large event where these new items would be introduced to the community as prizes for a fairly large community-wide event. There are several ways the 3D items can be applied to a character, but for simplicity we only used 4 different items that are worn on the head. This also means you can only choose one. To make players compete for the items we split Toribash up into four teams, similar to the Llama vs Pony events. The team at the top of the ladder would get an item for all its members, whereas the other teams would only get items for the higher preforming players, as an additional incentive to take part in the events after joining a team.
First of all, green hats. I've always wanted a green hat and it was the first time the item forgers created a 3D item for Toribash. Solax and Tinerr both worked on it. Previously hats were made using the hair forger, which wasn't as easy. You get a much neater result with these new items. While the green hat was originally part of a joke, it's now regarded to have some class associated with it.
The red submarines show that Toribash items can be anything at all. If you had to spot the odd one out, this is it. It's just a fun little little item and has the same origins as the green hat. Still considered to be a hat too.
Steering away from hats we went for a different type of item, "sunglasses". Sunglasses would likely become quite popular and the Torishop would have quite a variety of them. So we started with the fashionable shutter shades. Another fun item. We encountered a few problems with people who've made head textures where the eyes are just way too high to look normal, but for an item like this it's going to be worth getting a head texture to suit it.
For a long time it's been popular to have headphones painted on head textures. We wanted them to be one of the more detailed items to help it look hi-tech. By combining both 2D and 3D technologies, avwave created the first textured object item that Toribash has seen.
Right now we have some preliminary results that show Red Submarines have somehow beaten the odds and have actually dominated the competition. We really would like to finish calculating the scores and find out who came second, so we know once and for all what the best item is, after having put all the time and effort into setting up this event. We hoped to have given out all the prizes and released the items in the Torishop and made them tradeable in the market so that everyone might get a chance to have one. Instead we've run into a few legal issues regarding Toribash pushing the frontier of character customization.
Despite our best intentions, a prominent distributor of a popular "Hat Simulator" has notified Nabi Studios to cease releasing a new feature that allows users to create 3D objects as cosmetic additions to their player character. We have decided that the last thing we want to do now is jeopardize Toribash being released on Steam. So over the next few days we will be phasing out Shiai Tokens, terminating the March Madness events, and recalling any items released prior to the March events.
It goes without saying that we had no intention of breaching any copyrights or undercutting anyone in any way, especially not a classic first person shooter. We're sad to see it all go so soon. The future of 3D items in Toribash is looking pretty grim at the moment, although we may explore some alternatives well after the Steam release. Meanwhile, anyone who has 3D items please deactivate them immediately, and refrain from entering multiplayer if you own any 3D items while you await the recall.
Our apologies to those who own or were expecting these special items and our sympathy goes out to the families of those who have already lost 3D items. However, we hope that you can appreciate what is at stake for Toribash so that we might make this recall as seamless as possible.
