Butterfly knives are rather inefficient. They look cool and all, but compared to a decent regular folding knife they don't got much going for them (also lol for calling them weapons).
It is also not true that you cannot get a good quality knife for a low price.
The truth is that American brands either produce very very high quality for a very very high price or shit quality for cheap.
If you go to Scandinavia, for example, where there is actually a survival knife culture, you can get good quality for cheap. The difference is the attitude. Scandinavians actually need those knives to survive and they need them cheaply because literally every knife you're actually gonna use in nature is going to wear down. So you need knives that can be easily maintained and if necessary be replaced. You don't get that with a 250$ knife.
What expensive knives are good for are specific purposes they got designed for. A good cooking knife, for instance, will hardly ever see any abuse in its days unless the owner is an idiot.
I don't really see that happening with a knife you wish to carry around. Unless, of course, you are one of those people that carry around a knife to open boxes and envelopes. In that case a 250$ knife is definitely worth it. )o)
For every day use I would recommend Mora or EKA knives. I carry around an EKA Swede 8 and am very happy with it. Sturdy as fuck, doesn't require much sharpening, gets reasonably sharp (not super sharp but you don't need that in every day life anyway) and looks great as well.
If you want something for selfdefense or whatever, don't get a tiny knife. Get a baton, pepper spray or just a huge ass kukri machete. 8/ Butterfly knives are ridiculously inefficient.
