this is good discussion guys, glad you're readventuring back into childhood albums.
never have really been to interested in punk though, some songs from blink-182 are pretty good.

this is really what I remember in terms of music

bugsy malone was so stupid, but, so so good.
[19:59] <Lazors> man it's a good thing people don't see what i write here
oh my god, i hate all the songs from bugsy malone - they're all so annoying! the history behind it is very interesting though - have you heard about the st valentines day massacre? excuse the off-topic
I've heard of the st valentine's day massacre, but, not in the way that relates to bugsy malone though. feel free to explain it if it relates with the musical in some way/ bugsy, i'm sure it must be interesting.

it's not anything musical, but basically al capone's gang killed a bunch of bugsy malone's people.

music that leaves no space for interpretation

a great example of that is a lot of modern EDM, since the quality of the engineering on the songs is so crystal clear that i know exactly what i am listening to, to the smallest detail. this is bad to me because listening to a song is like getting a message transmitted to you. if you know exactly what the message is, why the fuck would you read it twice? consequently, those songs become tiring after listening to them for 3 times. i find more and more that when i listen to music i find one song that i really like, but then get tired of after listening to it a few times

that is why i enjoy ambient a lot, it is difficult to capture everything. the more a song is ambiguous, the longer it lasts to me
oh yeah
I guess my idea is somewhat like pusga's, but, different because something that really suggests music is bad is the simplicity of the lyrics, and by this I mean using language that is so basic, no metaphors, personifications, nothing interesting. meaning that its telling more of a story or something along those lines. it's irritating to describe and to listen to pretty much.
but, I guess that only goes for certain ranges of music, so, overall I'd have to say being generic is bad music. generic means the music has been heard thousands of times before with nothing new happening, and feels like listening to one track that was decent over and over again especially if you tune into half the radio channels in britain.
I guess generic stuff just doesn't sound good to me, meaning it defeats the point of music. although there are others who just hop aboard to listening to one genre because of one catchy chorus.
tl;dr mainstream and generic music grumble grumble

Then again if you don't like downloads and your more of a YouTube guy(seems like most people here) then I guess you wouldn't like it.

i don't like that website, most of the stuff i listened to there is hella pretentious lol but thx anyway

Please think twice before saying "all music is good". I'll save my input for later.

Well, in my opinion, it varies. I'm one to at least try any type of music, and I don't hate much. Though, music that You can't understand what the fuck they're saying or extreme repetition is just a nuisance. Music that repeats the same thing or has the same sort of basis like [Women, Money, and Weed. Or Big Trucks, beer, etc.] I like diversity. whether that be through the small, lowkey artists that need more popularity for their skill, or just seperate genres in general.

actually, can you link me some you like?

i like all the more popular stuff like Lifeforms etc. since im a normalpleb (i fucking hate global communication though)

my favourites are Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest and FSOL - Dead Cities

could only find a reversed version of Tomorrow's Harvest :( it is fantastic though. actually almost everything by Boards of Canada is fantastic, i would also recommend Music Has The Right To Children and the first 6 songs in Geogaddi, especially Gyroscope (6:55)

Dead Cities is more of a huge mix of genres but i still consider it ambient overall. the first 20 minutes of the album are actually very different from ambient. it gets a lot more ambient from 20:10 and on. my favourite songs from the album are Her Face Forms In Summertime though (8:50), Quagmire (38:34ish) and Glass (right after Quagmire)

FSOL - ISDN is great too

kid606 - The Soccergirl EP is great although it is not totally ambient (is it ever though?) i can't find it on youtube, there is only 1 song and it's not even my favourite :L but im sure you can torrent it somewhere. it is very relaxing, very friendly but nostalgic sounding synths, has one faster paced song in it that makes the whole album not as seemless but has a very interesting feel to it

actually i should upload that album someday. if i do i will link you

besides that there are the excellent Autechre ofc, Incunabula being my album of choice. the first time i listened i only liked one song (Maetl, spectacular song) but after a while i enjoyed everything. again not completely ambient, it can be barely considered IDM but i would argue that it is very ambient

other stuff i would recommend but havent heard that much: Eluvium - Static Nocturne (immersive, i listened to it once and was slightly bored but still enjoyed it i guess. i think im just too ADD for it)

i think repetition is fine. in fact it is one of the main elements of music, and is great for empmhasis (it is hard to notice that since repetition is practically inherent in music now, but listen to a sound alone and then listen to a sound multiple times in a song. the difference is huge, as in you either get tired of it or just get it stuck in your head in a good way)

I meant repetition in different songs. If a song has a catchy Chorus which plays a couple times that's fine of course.
