Yeah it's nice for quick/rough things. Usually convert to flash when cleaning up.

I used my pivot gifs as kind of wireframe for my animations in flash when I was kinda new to it (by importing them as a symbol.)
It was basically tracing though, but I found it easier to start off like that.
