I think Schools should be teaching for knowledge, here in Nyc the teachers just teach s we can pass a test called the reagents. If something is not on the reagents they dot teach it.

Maybe keeping it as an elective would be best, but Jesus. Not everyone knows how to do these things. Not everyone has the advantages. These should be tought in school. Mandatory or not.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2 isnt hard to memorize, if you think it is then you probably won't need to use it anyway. mainly because you wont be able to get a job that requires your brain to function properly

That wasn't what I wasn't insisting on. I'm saying if you know you don't want that field, why be forced to learn it? And yes, I am becoming a science teacher. But those equations I named are useless when it comes into becoming a science teacher for a middle school (what I am aiming for). I won't become an astronomer myself, so I don't exactly need trigonometry. Which isn't a problem personally since I have already learned it. So no worrying for me with that said "issue" if it comes up. So please, don't be ignorant.

And of course engineers need that. Its just not full on common job.

Does that mean everyone uses Photoshop? No. It doesn't. These topics should only be applicable to classes that specifically target that subject. Such as Photoshop, in this example.

Here is my issue with the English exam system,

I have no issue with learning things I am unlikely to learn in later life up to a point, for example all the English lessons and creative writing I sat through, first of all it trains my brain and who knows, maybe someday I will use those skills.

My problem is we arent being taught a subject, we are being taught to pass an exam based loosely around a subject, most of the time spent revising isnt actually thinking about content, more about how the examiners will try to trip you up. This gets to the point where I have to use a lot of time doing easy papers to not trip up on trick questions instead of doing work I am interested in, such as BMO2 papers. As this means I am not being stretched, and Im not looking at new content, or actually practicing mathematical abilities, my learning is actually hindered by the system and the exam itself.

If you dont understand these points, as in what Im trying to say, its probably not well written or formatted, please tell me to clarify any such points

Also @EJXIII I think schools need to teach you a wider range of skills than youre likely to carry forward, firstly not everyone is set on their carreer path and even those that are a prone to changing their mind its also impossible for a school to offer services covering all the carreer paths of pupils and offering a course that unique for each pupil, so they need to offer skills and content preparing you for a wide range of carreer paths

The issue in this case could be that critical thinking and problem solving in a real life subject like geography could be too complex for the exam board to come up with scenarios and answers which would be simple enough to be answered but complex enough to be worth doing, you also need facts memorized to be able to do this

This also brings us back to the original point, we are learning to pass an exam, not learning to do other things, critical thinking would not help you pass the geography exam so is not taught, I believe this problem lies with the exam boards rather than with the schools and teachers usually

Mandarin is the most spoken language in the entire world, yet other languages that don't have that title are part of the curriculum.
Tl;dr, Mandarin.

Probably because Mandarin is mostly spoken by Chinese, and China has a population of 1 billion, heck, about the same as the amount of people who speak English. I'd assume that these languages are spoken by many people spread out across the globe, not just because alot of people use it as a primary form of communication.

Mandarin is spoken by the most people

Mandarin is on the rise in the UK, idk about other countries but more and more schools do teach mandarin now, mine does for a start
