Ghosts ‘n Goblins not only holds in my memory as the most difficult game I’ve ever played, it scared the heck out of me as a kid. Out of pure fear and frustration, I would play G’nG over and over again, getting defeated more times than I can even recall. Why did it only take two hits to defeat Arthur? Shouldn’t there have been a little training in Arthur’s Kingdom on how to defeat ghost, goblins, and demons in the wild? What kind of knight has armour that falls apart so easily? Why do I have to play it twice to recuse Prin Prin? Having to play through not once, but twice to get the actual ending shows how little mercy Ghosts ‘n Goblins gives its players. Besides, what sort of ending is that? Congrats Arthur, after all that defeat and the many, many hours you’ve dumped into playing this game, all the Princess is gonna do is smooch you for rescuing her.

Still to this day, I shutter to think about how frightened this game made me, and yet I would play it over and over again because I was stubborn. A noted memory was that one of my siblings had left the Nintendo on with Ghosts ‘n Goblins in the machine, and I absolutely refused to go into the living room until it was turned off
