I would've thought that the argument for allowing it in private servers is that "Hey, this is our space, we're not being offensive, like it or leave it". This would then apply to clans - nobody's forcing anyone to read threads in clans that they aren't even apart of.

In the end, it boils down to a value judgment. Should be people be free to be non-offensive to each other (yet still using 'nigger') in their private spaces, or should someone's right to be offended trump that? Obviously we all have different opinions on this.
Nice discussion. I'll say I agree with most of you that it should depend on the context.

But, I'll add a small suggestion. In another forum I use, "curse" words are censored with stars. So, let's say you wanted to say the F word, then it would appear as f****. I'd say it would be a much more positive step in:

1-making people aware that these words should be used with caution
2- making the forum generally look a bit more friendly.

I'm not saying people who are using this censored word could just go around using it to hurt people. It still will depend on context, but this is just another way to make people aware that it is not okay to throw around "curse" words everywhere.

Also, with respect to the clan forums. I think this is more of a private space where clan members can speak more freely, and so a general ban wouldn't be deserved. If they're targeting or offending someone..well that's another matter anyway.

I'll expand on this in a while.

I've have seen black people using 'Nigga' in a derogatory manner. I won't argue that 'Nigger' is used worse but I don't think anyone respects either of them. 'Nigger', 'Faggot', 'Kike', 'Chink' and like words have no respect in them and do not convey anything positive, regardless of context or variation. However, I don't believe we should ban someone for simply using them. I feel like a simple infraction gets the point across, and if they repeat the offence, especially against the same victim, then they should get banned for not learning their lesson.

Below is proof of 'Nigga' being used in a derogatory manner. Has heavy use of profanity, but I just know someone would argue that 'Nigga' can't be use aggressively or derogatorily.

I approve of this aswell, me living in Tennessee i hear the term nigger a lot, but i've almost never heard someone calling someone a nigga that's trying to be offensive.
I'm going to give my personal opinion on this.

Nigger was a derogatory word decades ago. Some may argue that it still is, and they may be correct.
But the key word here is context. And, most people on the Toribash community do not actively state their race, and (unfortunately) often times people are assumed to be white. The race that this word is used against tends to be african american, but as I said before, race is not something that most people are aware of when it comes to each player. So, that means that "nigger" can not be directed towards another player with the intent of offending them because their race is unknown.
But, racist statements can still be blatantly made, such as simply saying that "niggers aren't people" or "I hate niggers". I believe that this is the context in which the word should be banworthy.

so apparently context matters a lot or something. I mean if i say "aight bible thumper, how u doin?" but by that logic context should change it and make it less offensive but shit if i was called this it would sting (i aint even christian) and this is something that has literally no backstory other than meaning someone who reads a bible imagine how people feel about the word n*gger with the amount of terrible shit it has in its backstory.

like that racoon guy said, nigga and n*gger are two different things. we've gathered this already since you are allowed to say nigga.
the rules are fine as they are, if someone reports someone for saying it then it clearly was seen as harassment by them and the other guy should be punished or whatever the hell happens.
we cant just say "grow a thicker skin" with shit like this.

I don't understand how stating that kids play a game makes pejorative language a bannable offense. This is the internet, and everyone is just another name on a screen. To prevent any issues, it would be so much easier to simply ban ALL of the words of a similar nature to "nigger", or you could simply not ban the word at all and let people figure out for themselves that people can't tell what they're offended by with just a username in a video game.

Just add a /filteron and /filteroff function for people who hate the language, and then ban for intentional filter dodging.

This is not Club Penguin.
We should not need filters.

That's why I suggested the filter can be turned on (and off) so people who don't give a shit about language can turn it off. I'm sorry that you can only read the first five words of a statement.

^ That's why. Faggots are food, so that word lands purely on context. Much like in the UK a "fag" is a cigarette.

That OFC doesn't mean that they aren't used as derogatory terms over here, but it's pretty obvious in the context - you wouldn't call someone an oddly appealing yet poorly named food product, at the same time you have no idea how many times I've been given shit for saying "BRB going for a fag" -_-'
