I get what you mean (disclaimer: i ain't even mad), but having been bullied fairly extensively myself, i can safely say that that is character development i could easily have lived without. As a result of it, my self-esteem is abysmal, my social skills are stunted, i'm very slow to actually let people get close to me (despite them being great friends), and in general i have a hard time taking initiative and doing something out of the ordinary out of fear of ridicule.
Possibly the only good things that has come out of it is that i would go to great lengths to prevent someone else from being subjected to the same, and that i have learned to really appreciate friends. While i obviously can't say if i'd be the same person today if i hadn't been bullied, i'm almost entirely certain that i wouldn't be any less happy.
So yeah, my stance on bullying is that of almost pathological hatred, as one of the very few things on this planet that i legitimately HATE. In my eyes, there is NO justification to make others feel miserable for the giggles. I don't care if the bully is feeling miserable himself, or if it's just some sod who jumps on the bandwagon because the sod doesn't want to be bullied, or if it's someone with aspergers who doesn't know better (they should be taught that such things just aren't okay from an early age), just don't do it. It helps nothing, you'll hate yourself in the future for it, and i will probably kick you in the knee with my steel-toed shoes if i see you doing it.
As for racism, i'm ashamed to admit that i have a bit of involuntary and latent racism going on in the back of my head. I know it's wrong, so i do my best to not let it get to me, but for some reason i just can't look away from the visual differences. Now please, don't get all up in my face for saying that, because i don't want to think like that, it's subconscious and involuntary. I'm reasonably sure it stems primarily from the bullying, since a striking number of my antagonists back then were of different ethnicity, and well... They didn't exactly try to rectify my stereotypes. I've also formed similar views of danish people with certain "thuggish" facial features, which one might argue is just as bad. My biggest woe is that the stereotypes i've formed are in tune with reality annoyingly often.
But, hear me out: Stereotyping is bad, but the human mind loves to do it. I think most people do it, actually. The key is to not act on these impulses, to accept differences. Racists don't do that. They may have had unfortunate experiences in their past like myself, but that's not really an excuse to judge completely unrelated people. So, despite my subconscious being silly, my belief is that racism is wrong in the extreme.
