If you don't believe in natural rights and accept their existence then I will just exit the conversation right now.

And you are right. I am a theist. Catholic. I also belong to an society built of objective thinking. And I am considering all aspects of marriage. And I don't see how the "ultimate goal" per-say is procreating. BUT. I will stoop to your level (provided you accept natural rights), and debate with you as if the ultimate goal and our drive is for the prolonging of humans. Over population will end the human race. And homosexual marriage helps because they don't procreate. And the more homosexuals that exist in the world, the more people not procreating at the highest rate ever known to man. It's a HUGE issue right now. So simply for your shallow reasoning of prolonging the human race rather than any aspects of love, one should support domestic partnership.

And as for them adopting: Why on earth would you not allow two people who love each other to have a kid? Would you rather them live as orphans? You need to understand that many homosexuals would take a child as such a lavish gift that they could potentially treat them incredibly well.

And again, sinking towards your incredibly shallow state of mind about marriage: Doesn't homosexuals having more rights help the economy? If the work place doesn't discriminate against sexual preference, homosexuals can start acquiring higher paying jobs and purchase expensive items, and further help and economic crisis.

So there are your immoral yet statistical points of why homosexuals should have equal rights.

Given the fact you didn't concede to the fact that natural rights exist I will no longer participate in this debate. There is no way to sway you with any logical though process or reasoning at this point.

Hydrotoxin: You should learn now that not everyone is worth debating with. Some basis and grounds to be established between people before an convincing arguments can be made. To call you insane isn't fair, but the simple fact remains that I find the fact you refuse to accept the existence of natural rights is a basis of a great deal of philosophy that I believe in. And that all objectivists in our society. So I am sorry I "disappointed" you for leaving this debate. There is a certain line where I am going to bend to opinions of other. This is honestly, for me, equivalent to accepting that all of our laws of physics are just lies and are wrong, so I can't just "cope" to those circumstances.

If you have a vent channel you want to discuss this with me, I will be more than happy to discuss this further with you.

As much as some would like to think that the law views everything objectively and treats everyone with a general demeanour of egalitarianism, if everyone was equal in all respects, there wouldn't really be much of a need for those laws in the first place, would there?

And America will keep frowning upon homosexuality until the law gives homosexuals equal civil rights. Public opinion is largely shaped by law. Until the law changes, bigots will use it as justification (and fuel), much like they use 'sacred texts' for the same purpose.

Redneck: "Faggot marriage is illegal cuz it's a perversion, nd California law and GOD agrees wit me"

The whole purpose of "social development" thing is to minimize suffering and maximize efficiency. There is no serious drawback to letting gays marry, while not doing so would simply isolate a group and create unrest and hinder efficiency. From your posts it seems you think homosexuality is a strain of flu virus, that will just spread to everyone who grows up around gays. Clearly it's nonsense. Homosexuals are a minority, yet they were always present, even in societies who wouldn't even recognize that such thing existed (Soviet Union, for example). Hardwired sexual orientation > societal influence, always.

It's highly debatable.

Using "all kids should have a mom" as an argument against gay adoption is like me saying "all men should be healthy" to a person with diabetes, refusing to give him insulin until he dies.

The kids we are talking about have no family at all. It's better they get some family, gay or otherwise.

Hydrotoxin: It's called "domestic partnership". And it deserves the same rights that weddings bring. If it isn't done by a priest or rabbi, but by the state then religion has no right to dictate against it.

Judeo-Christian religions may find homosexuals to be abominations, but they aren't the state, and they can't prohibit an act not done by a priest. They cannot hold the same economic roles right now BTW. Many schools don't allow homosexuals to teach, and that's just one of many professions. And as Odlov said: Laws dictate social acceptance. African-Americans weren't treated anywhere near equal until after laws where passed for their equality, not before, not during, after. So it's about time we get this social train rolling with laws SO THAT it can be acceptable globally within our life time.

Civil unions are fine by me, but marriage is, at the most fundamental level of the largest religion in the world, unacceptable. I just don't consider the inability to naturally reproduce to be a societal boon, but as I said before, they can perform just as well as a "normal" member of society in terms of economic roles. I fully acknowledge the fact that homosexuality will be acceptable in not too many years-- I'm just pointing out that RIGHT NOW, they aren't.

I don't know how many times i have to bring this up, but marriage is NOT just a religious ceremony, but a contract which carries far more benefits than the phony "civil union". Either we strip it of it's practical benefits and leave it a purely religious rite, or we grant access to all citizens.

He makes a good point there Hydroxin. For a while I thought the same way you do, that since the act of marriage was "founded by the church" than it should remain in the hands of the church as to who can partake.

But, if you look into the legal aspects of a marriage, and how deeply marriage has become ingrained in our society, apart from its religious beginnings, to deny it to people based on those same religious morals that we have removed marriage so far away from goes against some of the finer points of the US (assuming we are speaking about the US).

As for adoption, yes, yes, all the way. The fact that people would rather let children grow up unloved and basically alone rather than entrust them to people who's only difference is that their sexuality goes against a book written thousands of years ago it RETARDED. Go visit some bad parts of town, see some actual poverty, and then tell me it is better to let kids end up living like that than any to grow up in a safe home where, even if they get made fun of or they turn out gay, they are far less likely to end up on drugs or in gangs. Its amazing because normally the people who oppose gay adoption also appose abortion, because its ok to let kids suffer and have no chance, but to stop that before it happens, well that's just wrong.

What I foresee being a problem with the "give marriage access to all citizens", however, is the lack/removal of a dividing line (that will most likely be continuously challenged by more groups as time marches on).

Will it officially become;

"the joining of two people"

"the joining of people" (polygamy)

"the joining of organisms" ( http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/...050339590.html )

or simply "the joining" (there are people who claim to be deeply in love with buildings and inanimate objects)

?

I must admit "the joining" does have a nice fantasy/future ring to it.

By this logic the re-legalization of alcohol would have already lead to every single drug imaginable. Those are not the issues being discussed, and to mention them is pointless as A: Polygamy is illegal for wholly different reasons and B: there will not only NEVER be a large enough amount of people in the next two categories for them to happen, but animals and inanimate objects are not the same as a homosexual person no matter which way you slice it.

EDIT: That link is a piece of fluff news. If you really think that the woman did that because she feels connected or sexually attracted to the dolphin, you are missing the point. They publish those stories to have something "happy" to talk about, not to make a point on social issues.
